Restoration Of Gothic Tunnels And The North Campus Quadrangle
City College Of New York, NY

This $7 million restoration involved major structural stabilization of the existing 1906, George E. Post design, Landmark Gothic Tunnels and ADA compliance upgrade of the Quadrangle along Convent Avenue. Alterations to the original design carried out during its lifetime include the removal of the East-West processional walkway, addition of coal storage cells below the upper promenade and an emergency generator placed overlooking the Quad. Years of neglect, leaky roofs and high temperature hot water pipes inside this partially subterranean tunnel system caused extensive structural damage. After researching records at the NYC Historical Society, City College Library and with the co-operation of the NYC Landmark Conservancy, original designs, details and materials were established and the site was restored to its original glory including the Flagpole with its ornate cast iron base.
