Neiman-Marcus
San Francisco, California

At Neiman Marcus, the 5-story specialty department store, the challenge involved designing a monolithic windowless building cohesive with the palm-studded garden of Union Square in the heart of San Francisco. The historic rotunda with its stained glass dome which were part of the original 1896 building were restored and reconstructed as the pivotal entrance foyer facing the square.  The celebrated rotunda serves as a five-story entrance atrium and has evolved into being the focal point of this building. The exquisite stained glass dome is visible yet sheathed form the street by a curved glass curtain wall. The exterior walls fronting the two streets are clad in red Taivassalo granite in a diagonal checkered pattern of alternating flame and polished finishes.
