Learning Garden, PS 312 And IS 78
Brooklyn, NY

This was an exciting project to create a working urban farm to be incorporated into the curriculum at PS 312 and IS 78. The intent of the farm was to provide opportunities for students to learn about nutrition, environment and the food cycle. Apart from vegetable gardening plots, a fruit orchard, a pollinator’s flower and herb garden, and a compost are, the farm also need the following built spaces: a greenhouse, storage shed,  an outdoor classroom with kitchen elements, and a flexible “central green” to accommodate farmers markets, fall festivals, shared meals and other farm and school related events. APA was involved in the design of all the built spaces. The design team decided to apply a unique approach in creating the built spaces by using prefab containers in innovative ways to create the spaces desired. Overall the garden was given a very playful and whimsical feel which would be conducive to the learning process of young minds.
