Canadian Broadcast Center
Toronto, Canada

As a part of a mixed-use development, the building is a ten-story regional headquarters for CBC’s radio and television production and broadcasting facilities.

This 160,000m2 broadcasting and production complex is one of the largest in North America and incorporates a number of unique design features to ensure excellence in every standard of performance.  Work included the design and detailing of more than 46,000m2 of office and public space, 65,000m2 of technical spaces such as studios, live music theatre and live entertainment facilities, and 11 state-of-the-art libraries and archives.

The basic building is defined by a super-grid of columns and beams approximately 30’ x 30’ square.  The forms and colors of the building exterior provide a clear distinction to each of the facades.  The theatrical/production functions of the building are translated into the interior and the exterior architecture.  The main entrance along Front Street is defined by a reflective glass cylinder which projects beyond the grid and above the cornice line at the roof.

This complex project, the largest architectural project in Canada at the time, was completed within 1% of budget and on schedule.
